What is Ransomware Ransomware?

What is Ransomware?

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that encrypts files on your computer. After infecting your computer with this software and encrypting your files, hackers demand money from you for the key to remove the encryption. In a way, they hold your files hostage and demand a ransom for you to access them.

So, how do these types of software infect your computer and spread?

One of the most common methods used by hackers, though not the only one, is to send emails containing viruses and trick you into opening them, downloading attachments, or clicking on links. These emails usually have subject lines and messages like "Warning, your account will be closed!" or "Final notice for unpaid invoice!" aiming to prompt action by frightening or alarming you. When you click on the link in the email or download the attachments, you are actually downloading the file that runs the ransomware software on your computer. After that, the software can take over your computer and encrypt your files. Worse yet, if you are using a network-connected computer, malware can spread to all computers connected to that network (for example, all work computers within an office).

How to Protect Against Ransomware Attacks?

The best thing you can do regarding malware attacks is to take and implement necessary security measures to minimize the possibility of an attack. Here's what you can do:

  1. Use a good antivirus program
  2. Regularly update your software
  3. Ensure regular backups
  4. Do not overlook the human factor

1. Use a good antivirus program

The first step in protecting your computer from potential threats is using a good antivirus program. Some of these can be expensive, while others might be free. You can choose from options that suit your budget. However, make sure the software you choose has at least daily malware scanning and firewall features.

2. Regularly update your software

Software updates are usually done to patch security vulnerabilities discovered in previous versions. So, using outdated software leaves these doors open for hackers. Therefore, ensure you regularly update all your devices. This includes updates for content management systems like WordPress used for your website and updates for your antivirus software.

3. Ensure regular backups

Even if you have taken all the precautions to protect your computer and website from possible attacks, regularly back up all your business-related data. This way, if you encounter ransomware or similar software, you can access your files from backups.

For added security, store these backups both on an offline source like an external disk and in the cloud.

4. Do not overlook the human factor

No matter how much you secure your business technically, it's essential to educate your employees about security. If malware infects an employee's computer, it can jeopardize all computers connected to the same network. Therefore, educating yourself and your employees about internet dangers and adopting the best security practices can prevent many issues from arising in the first place.

For instance, behaviors like not downloading files from unknown or insecure sites, always using strong passwords and changing them regularly, recognizing a malicious email, and not opening attachments or clicking on links in such emails can make it significantly more difficult for hackers attempting to seize your information.
